Human age limit

In the flood story the Bible gives us a piece of wisdom about the upper limit on the age of man.

Genesis 6:3 :In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years.

Apparently god was wrong though. The oldest person in the world Jeanne Calment happened to be 122 years old upon her death.

One Response to “Human age limit”

  1. I’m not sure what this has to do with a global flood (which I agree is an absurdity), but in any case you’re picking and choosing your translations here, without informing the reader that the translation you’ve selected (which you don’t identify), is not the only possible rendering of the text, and is most likely wrong in any case.

This is from the New English Translation:

    Genesis 6:
3 So the Lord said, “My spirit will not remain in5 humankind indefinitely, since they are mortal. They will remain for 120 more years.”11

    Here is the footnote:

11tn Heb “his days will be 120 years.” Some interpret this to mean that the age expectancy of people from this point on would be 120, but neither the subsequent narrative nor reality favors this. It is more likely that this refers to the time remaining between this announcement of judgment and the coming of the flood.

Writing in 1748, John Gill made the same point:

yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years: meaning not the term of man’s life, reduced to this from the length of time he lived before the flood; but this designs the space that God would give for repentance, before he proceeded to execute his vengeance on him; this is that “longsuffering of God” the apostle speaks of in the afore mentioned place, “that waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was preparing”; and so both the Targums of Onkelos and Jonathan interpret it of a space of an hundred and twenty years given them to repent:

Note that ‘both the Targums of Onkelos and Jonathan’ (two of the earliest Jewish commentaries, both around the 1st century AD), ‘interpret it of a space of an hundred and twenty hears given them to repent’, not a lifespan of 120 years.
